This term, we are focussing on emotions, to encourage children to notice and understand happy and sad, as well as angry for some classes. We try to encourage children to look at their own faces at different points in the day or if they show a particular emotion during a specific activity, for example; if they are laughing or smiling, to look in the mirror and see what ‘happy’ looks like, and vice versa for sad. The children love looking in the mirror at themselves so this is a nice way to encourage this learning and development.
To help with this learning, we linked it to the topic by making playdoh faces. The children were able to explore making a happy or sad face on a blank face. A visual of happy and sad were close by so they could have an example of a familiar visual to them. Most of the children made a happy face straight away, as this is a common face they are familiar with.
