Movement breaks and gross motor activities are key for the development of our children in so many ways. Gross motor skills involve using large muscle groups in the arms, legs, and torso to perform everyday physical activities such as walking, running, jumping, and throwing. These skills are essential for strength, balance, coordination, and overall physical confidence in our children, and so many of them need this time to help regulate themselves, or be ready for the next part of their learning.

This is exactly what we aim to support in their weekly PE sessions, and, as you can see from the pictures below, this is what the PE teacher focuses on and supports in his teaching. The children love exploring the hall with the different climbing apparatus, and it really helps build their confidence as such.

In music, the children also have the chance to build on their gross motor skills by singing songs that are linked to different movements. It could be jumping up and down, walking around the room, or using music instruments, such as xylophones, drums or tambourines to encourage this feeling of coordination and confidence.
