What a wonderful time we have had celebrating Black History Month in Reception!

The children have been busy discovering what history means, exploring the past and learning why we celebrate important people, events and achievements.

We began by talking about different celebrations, what makes them special and why we celebrate them. The children loved sharing their own experiences, which opened up some lovely conversations about our similarities, differences and the many cultures that make our world so special.

As part of our learning, we discovered the story of Jack Leslie, a talented Black footballer who faced unfair treatment. His story encouraged some thoughtful discussions about fairness, kindness and why everyone deserves to be treated equally. We linked this to our own experiences in Reception, reminding ourselves of the importance of playing fairly, respecting differences and making sure everyone feels included.

We then explored the incredible contributions Black people have made to British history and our everyday lives. From doctors and nurses who have cared for generations of people, to teachers, inventors and other inspirational figures who have helped shape our communities. The children were particularly fascinated to learn about Black inventors and their contributions to developments such as traffic lights and electric lighting.

To celebrate the wonderful diversity around us, the children explored flags from different countries around the world and used their artistic skills to recreate some of their favourites. We were so impressed by their creativity and enthusiasm!

It has been a fantastic time filled with curiosity, meaningful conversations and lots of exciting discoveries. We hope the children have enjoyed learning about Black history as much as we have enjoyed teaching it, and that they continue to recognise and celebrate the wonderful contributions Black people have made to Britain and the wider world.
