Year 4 have been exploring the fascinating world of Ancient Egyptian art, discovering how the Egyptians used papyrus, symbols and decorative patterns to communicate ideas and create beautiful designs.

The children learned about the traditional process of making papyrus and explored how they could replicate similar techniques to create their own scrolls. They then researched Ancient Egyptian symbols and patterns, using their discoveries to inspire their own artistic ideas and incorporate historical influences into their designs.

When developing their final designs, the children carefully considered composition, balance, symmetry and focal points. They explored how to arrange their symbols and patterns so that each element worked together to create a well-balanced design. They also experimented with contrast, considering how differences in colour and tone could make important features stand out and draw the viewer’s attention.

Throughout the project, the children investigated a range of artistic media, exploring the properties of different materials and considering how each could be used to achieve a particular effect. They made thoughtful choices about which techniques and materials would best communicate their ideas and enhance their finished scrolls.

Through this project, Year 4 have developed their understanding of historical and cultural art, while strengthening their skills in design, composition and the use of materials. They have discovered how studying the art of the past can inspire their own creative work today.
