Year 5 have been exploring cultural art, focusing on the beautiful traditions of calligraphy and illuminated letters. The children researched and studied historical examples, looking closely at their intricate details, decorative patterns, borders and use of colour. They then used these ideas as inspiration to design and create their own illuminated letters, reimagining this traditional art form with a modern twist.

Throughout the project, the children developed their technical skills by experimenting with a range of artistic media. They explored the properties of different materials and considered how to select and combine them to achieve particular effects.

A key focus was understanding how contrast can make artwork more striking and effective. The children experimented with contrasting colours and tones to make important features stand out, using lighter and darker areas to create depth and direct the viewer’s attention. They considered how contrasting textures and intricate patterns could add interest, while balancing detailed decorative areas with simpler sections to prevent their designs from becoming overwhelming. By layering different colours, patterns and textures, they explored how to create a clear focal point and ensure their lettering remained the main feature of the artwork.

The children also deepened their understanding of composition by carefully considering the placement of focal points, backgrounds and decorative frames. They explored how borders and surrounding patterns could guide the viewer’s eye towards the lettering, while thoughtful choices about colour, tone and texture helped separate different sections and bring the overall design together.

Through this project, Year 5 have developed their understanding of cultural art and how traditional techniques can inspire contemporary designs. They have strengthened their ability to make thoughtful artistic choices, using contrast, pattern, texture and composition to create artwork that is both decorative and visually effective.
