This half term, Year 5 have begun an exciting new science topic: Animals, including Humans. Our lessons so far have sparked some brilliant curiosity and fascinating discussions!

This week, we have been exploring the gestational periods of different animals, including how long various species stay in the womb before birth. The children were amazed to learn how much this varies across the animal kingdom – from just a few weeks in some animals to nearly two years in others!

We then turned our focus to humans, looking closely at the stages of growth and development. We studied how a human fetus changes week by week in the womb and discussed the incredible journey from conception to birth. This led to some thoughtful reflections and a deeper understanding of how our bodies begin and develop.

In addition, we used scientific data to investigate patterns in human growth. The children plotted their current height on a line graph and used it to make predictions about how tall they might be when they are fully grown. This activity not only supported their understanding of data handling but also linked beautifully to real-life science.
