This week in Science, Year 5 have been getting hands-on as part of our Materials and Their Properties unit. We’ve been learning all about reversible changes – where materials can be separated or returned to their original state.
To test our understanding, we faced a tricky challenge: a mixture of sand, salt, iron filings, and water! Our task was to work out how to separate each material again.
Working like real scientists, we:
Used a coffee filter to separate the sand from the salt water.
Discovered that salt dissolves in water, so we needed another step to get it back.
Used a magnet to attract and remove the iron filings.
Finally, used a hairdryer to evaporate the water and leave behind the salt crystals.
The children loved experimenting, problem-solving, and seeing science in action.
It was a fantastic way to explore how materials behave and to see which changes are reversible!
