This week in Year 5, we have been diving into the dramatic and powerful narrative story The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. The children have been captivated by the story’s haunting atmosphere and gripping events.
Our focus has been on rewriting a key part of the story from the perspective of Bess, the landlord’s daughter. This gave us a chance to explore her thoughts and emotions in more depth, bringing her voice to the forefront of the story.
To enhance our writing, we worked on using a range of literary techniques. The children used speech to move the story forward and reveal character intentions, figurative language to create vivid imagery, and rhetorical questions to engage the reader and build tension.
It’s been fantastic to see the creativity and empathy they’ve brought to their work.
