This half term, Year 5 have been busy combining their Science and Design & Technology learning in a fun (and tasty!) way.
In Science, the children have been learning about reversible and irreversible changes. To deepen their understanding, we followed this up in our DT lessons by exploring irreversible changes through baking.
We began our DT unit with some research. The children took part in a blind taste test of a range of biscuits, carefully evaluating the flavour, texture and appearance. This helped them to think critically about what makes a successful biscuit and gave them ideas for their own designs.
Next, the children used their research to design their own biscuits, deciding on ingredients, shapes and flavours. They explained their choices clearly and thought about how their designs would meet the success criteria.
Today, the children put their plans into action and baked their own biscuits. They were able to see first-hand how mixing and heating ingredients causes an irreversible change, linking their practical work back to their science learning.
The children showed fantastic enthusiasm, teamwork and creativity throughout the unit – and enjoyed tasting the final results! 🍪
