This week, Year 5 had a fantastic time celebrating VE Day and learning about the end of World War II in Europe. It was a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and reflect on the importance of peace, remembrance, and community.
To mark the occasion, we spent the day enjoying a range of traditional wartime activities. The children had great fun playing games from the 1940s, including hopscotch, What Time Is It, Mr. Wolf?, skipping, and Red Rover. Laughter and teamwork filled the playground as pupils experienced the kinds of games children might have played 80 years ago.
At lunchtime, we held a special outdoor picnic. Everyone enjoyed classic sandwiches in the sunshine, bringing a real sense of community spirit to the day — just like the street parties that took place on VE Day in 1945!
As part of our learning, the children also created their own VE Day propaganda posters, exploring how imagery and messaging were used during the war. Their artwork was thoughtful, creative, and a great way to deepen their understanding of this historical event.
We ended the day with a special assembly to commemorate VE Day. Together, we reflected on the significance of the day and honoured those who served during the war.
It was a truly memorable day, filled with learning, reflection and fun — a big well done to all of Year 5!
