Year 3 have been busy becoming petrologists as part of their science learning all about rocks. The children explored six different types of rock: chalk, limestone, sandstone, granite, marble and slate.

Instead of following a set experiment, the children designed their own investigations to find out how hard or soft each rock was. They carefully tested the rocks using everyday items such as sandpaper, nails and plastic spoons, making close observations and recording what happened.

Once they had gathered their results, the children used their evidence to help them classify the rocks. They worked out whether each rock was sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic.

Year 3 showed fantastic enthusiasm and scientific thinking throughout the lesson – well done, everyone!
