Year 3 Botanical Art: Abstract Flower Compositions
Year 3 have recently completed a botanical-themed drawing unit, culminating in the creation of striking abstract flower compositions. Using zoomed-in photographs and viewfinders, pupils explored how cropping an image can reveal unusual shapes and patterns, helping them design artwork with a strong sense of balance, colour, tone and texture.

Throughout the project, the children refined their soft pastel techniques, learning how to smudge and blend smoothly, build layers of colour, and place contrasting colours side by side to draw the viewer’s eye to key focal points. The final pieces beautifully showcase their growing confidence, creativity and observational skills.
