During World War II, life in Dagenham changed in many ways and women played a vital part in keeping the country running while many men were away fighting. The year 6 children have been learning about the incredible jobs that Dagenham women did during the war, including working in factories like the famous Ford plant to produce machinery and vehicle parts, making bombs and bullets in munitions factories, taking on clerical and office work, becoming bus conductors, drivers, and mechanics, joining the Women’s Land Army to help grow food, and serving as nurses and first aid workers caring for those injured in air raids. They have been combining their digital skills with their history knowledge to create their own Google Sites full of information about women’s roles in Dagenham during WW2, sharing facts, images, videos and stories that show just how important women were to the local community and the war effort.
