Reception children have been learning about Chinese New Year celebration all around the world. Children have learnt about the traditions that usually take place during the celebrations of this important festival for example, watching the story about how this festival began during the reign of the Jade Emperor. Children learnt about the dragon dances, people dressing up in traditional Chinese dresses during this festival celebrations, tradition of having fortune cookies and noodles, elders giving money to children in a red envelope as gifts. Children also learnt that it is the year of the horse.
Children not only made their own Chinese dragons but also had the experience of cooking noodles, serving, and sharing from a bowl amicably. We spoke about menus and chopsticks which for most of our children was very new and unfamiliar. Children were also shown numbers written in the Chinese language. Overall, this week was full of fun embedded along with great learning experiences and opportunities.
