Our Year 6 children recently took part in a fantastic seafood workshop led by expert chefs from Billingsgate Market, organised by Barking and Dagenham’s Food Education Coordinator. Knowing that fish can sometimes be a tricky food for children to enjoy, we wanted to inspire them to try it as part of our Healthy Schools initiative—especially as it is so nutritious. The pupils were introduced to a range of fascinating fish, including hake, seabass and even octopus. They were able to touch and hold the fish while learning interesting facts about each one. The children also heard all about chef CJ Jackson and her impressive career as a fishmonger, cookery writer and Head of The Seafood School at Billingsgate. After exploring the incredible seafood selection, the children were treated to a delicious mackerel fishcake. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm throughout the workshop, and they left with a better understanding of the benefits of eating fish and a real excitement to try more in the future.
