As part of the Year 6 RE curriculum, pupils visited Darul Ummah Goresbrook Mosque and St Alban’s Church Becontree. During the visits, the children explored key questions such as: Why is meeting together important for religious people? What values and practices do religions share?

They learned about a variety of objects found in both the mosque and the church and discovered their significance in religious worship. Pupils also discussed why religious buildings are important to believers, understanding that they are places where people come together to share their faith, learn from one another, support each other and feel part of a wider community.

They also learned that Christianity and Islam share many important values that guide how believers live and treat others. Both religions teach the importance of compassion, kindness and caring for people in need. They encourage believers to be fair and just, to forgive others and to treat everyone with dignity and respect. Community is also a key value in both faiths, with people coming together in places of worship to pray, learn and support one another. Generosity is another shared value, shown through helping those less fortunate and giving to charity. These shared values help followers of both religions build strong, caring communities and encourage people to live good and meaningful lives.
