Year 5 Explore Mathematical Art Through Islamic Geometry

Year 5 have been exploring the fascinating world of mathematical art by studying geometric patterns inspired by Islamic art. The children began by learning about the history, meaning and cultural importance of these intricate designs, discovering how patterns are often used to represent unity, balance and infinity.

Pupils then developed their understanding of symmetry through practical activities, experimenting with symmetrical colouring and identifying rotational symmetry within different patterns. Using only circles and straight lines, they carefully constructed their own geometric designs, applying mathematical accuracy alongside creativity.

The final stage of the project allowed the children to design and refine their own unique patterns, demonstrating excellent focus, precision and problem-solving skills. This project beautifully combined art, mathematics and cultural learning, resulting in striking artwork that celebrates both creativity and structure.
