Year 6 pupils had a fantastic hands-on experience during their Design and Technology project, creating their own delicious fish cakes. The project began with an exciting seafood workshop led by professional chefs from Billingsgate Market, where the children examined a variety of different fish and learned about their characteristics. They also sampled mackerel fish cakes, which inspired their own designs. As part of the project, the children learned about nutrition and the many health benefits of eating fish, as well as where fish comes from and the importance of sustainability. They discussed how fishing methods such as trawler fishing can cause environmental problems if not carefully managed.
Working in teams, the children chose from tinned salmon, mackerel or tuna and carefully selected seasonings and ingredients such as cheese, onion, lemon, herbs and spices to enhance flavour. Through tasting, designing and making their own fish cakes, many pupils became more confident trying new foods and more comfortable eating fish. The project successfully combined practical cooking skills with learning about healthy eating, teamwork and responsible food choices.
