During this term the children in year 6 have been learning all about Flag Football. The children have been through a grueling training camp, learning a wide range of new skills and rules. They have been taking ‘Snaps’ pulling ‘Flags’ ‘receiving’ passes, ‘making plays’, ‘Running Routes’ and scoring ‘Touch Downs’. Much of this vocabulary, the rules, skills and concepts of the game have taken many hours of intense teaching and learning. The children have applied many practice hours and have been getting the repetitions in.
The most difficult part of this process was picking 10 players to go to the borough competition. The high level of learning, ability and commitment to this sport is what made the selection process so difficult. The fun has been contagious and the majority of the children have enjoyed learning about a brand new sport that an exclusive amount of schools have also been learning.
The fortunate 10 players went to the borough competition. They played 3 group games winning 2 and drawing 1, this was enough to see the team finish top of their group and qualify for the semi-finals. The team saved their biggest win for the sem-final with a landslide victory vs Beam.
This win took the team to the Finals where they eventually fell just short and finished the competition 2nd overall. It has been an incredible experience, the tournament and subsequent performances and victories were a testament to the children. We are all proud of their efforts and one day we may see one or more of our players at the Super Bowl.
