Year 6 have been learning about evacuation as part of our history topic and through our class book, Letters from the Lighthouse. In the story, Olive has been evacuated from London to a coastal village, and we have been comparing her experiences to those of real children from Dagenham during the Second World War.

We are very lucky at Monteagle to know exactly where our pupils were evacuated to in 1939, which makes our learning feel especially real and personal. Through our role play activities, we imagined what it might have felt like to leave our homes, say goodbye to our families and travel by train to the countryside.

We have discovered that some evacuees had wonderful experiences with their host families, while others found it much more difficult to adjust. Year 6 have really enjoyed stepping back in time to understand what life was like for children during the war and are looking forward to using this knowledge in their writing inspired by Letters from the Lighthouse.
