Pupils in Year 3 and Year 5 have recently completed two exciting art projects that allowed them to explore creativity, storytelling and design through different artistic techniques.
Year 3 – Mythical Chimera Creatures
Year 3 have been expl
oring mythology through a craft-based art project inspired by the idea of the chimera, a mythical creature made from parts of different animals. The children began by designing their own imaginative creatures, carefully selecting which animal features they wanted to combine.
Once their creatures were planned, pupils chose a suitable habitat where their chimera might live. They then created an impressionist-style background, using colour and expressive brushwork to represent the environment of their creature.
To complete their artwork, pupils carefully cut out parts of different animals and arranged them into a balanced composition to form their chimera. The final pieces show fantastic imagination, thoughtful design and excellent cutting and arranging skills.
Year 5 – Illuminated Lettering
Year 5 have been studying the art of calligraphy and illuminated lettering, inspired by medieval manuscripts and decorative storybook texts. Pupils began by exploring how different letter styles can communicate character and meaning.
Each pupil selected a letter and carefully designed the font and structure, thinking about how the shape and lines would guide the viewer’s eye. They then created decorative backgrounds and borders, developing their own themes and patterns.
Throughout the process, pupils considered important artistic elements such as balance, flow and composition, as well as contrast in colour, tone, texture and pattern to ensure their letter stood out as a clear focal point.
The final pieces demonstrate fantastic creativity and attention to detail, and it has been wonderful to see the pride pupils have taken in their work.
Both year groups have produced some truly impressive artwork, and we are delighted to celebrate their creativity and artistic development.
