This week, Year 5 students had the fantastic opportunity to celebrate Black History Month with a special visit from the Iroko Theatre Company. The experience was both educational and fun, giving our students a deeper appreciation for African culture and music.
The session kicked off with an introduction to African drums, where students learned about the different types of drums and the unique sounds they produce. From the deep tones of the djembe to the sharp rhythms of the dunun, our Year 5 students were amazed by the diversity of instruments and the rich traditions behind them.
Following the informative introduction, the children had the chance to try playing the drums themselves. Working together as a group, they created a variety of rhythms, experimenting with tempo, volume, and syncopation. It was wonderful to see them collaborating, listening to each other, and building a cohesive sound as a team. The energy in the room was electric as the students drummed in unison, creating a memorable, immersive experience.
This hands-on activity allowed the children to not only engage with the music but also understand how African drumming plays an important role in storytelling and community. The session was a beautiful blend of history, culture, and creativity—an experience we’re sure they’ll remember!
A huge thank you to the Iroko Theatre Company for bringing such a vibrant and educational experience to our school. We look forward to continuing to explore and celebrate Black History Month in even more exciting ways!
