Intent
At Monteagle Primary School, our MFL programme aims to ignite pupils’ curiosity and enthusiasm for learning French while deepening their understanding of language and culture. We are committed to nurturing confident speakers and listeners who can communicate effectively and appreciate cultural diversity. Rooted in our core values of trust, respect, and working hard, we strive to create lifelong learners who approach language learning with dedication and openness, fostering respect for different cultures and perspectives.
Implementation
All Key Stage 2 classes follow the Language Angels scheme, which provides a carefully planned and progressive French curriculum. Lessons are designed to build pupils’ vocabulary, language skills, and understanding of grammar gradually, through engaging and age-appropriate topics.
Our curriculum planning ensures that lessons offer appropriate challenge and stretch, encouraging pupils to work hard and develop their language skills step-by-step. Language learning is structured around all four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a balanced focus on each.
Pupils build on prior learning as lessons regularly recycle and consolidate vocabulary and grammar, helping them to manipulate language rather than just recite it. This approach supports pupils to develop increasingly complex sentences and communicate with confidence and accuracy.
Teachers continuously assess pupils’ progress through formative assessments in each lesson, monitoring all language skills to ensure pupils are making steady progress and receiving the support they need to succeed.
Impact
As pupils progress through the programme, they encounter units that increase in linguistic and grammatical complexity, encouraging greater fluency and independence. Early units focus on basic vocabulary and simple phrases, while later units challenge pupils to express their own ideas and opinions using a wider range of vocabulary and more complex grammatical structures.
By Year 6, pupils confidently create longer spoken and written texts, using conjunctions, adjectives, adverbs, and justifications. Throughout their learning journey, pupils demonstrate trust in their own abilities, respect for the language and culture they are studying, and a hardworking approach to mastering new skills.
This continuous, cumulative learning ensures pupils leave Monteagle Primary equipped with a strong foundation in French, a passion for languages, and a respectful awareness of cultural diversity.
