Our topic for this term is Light and Dark, and we will have lots of exciting activities throughout the week. We will enjoy exploring, investigating and getting creative as we learned about the world around us.
Literacy – Exploring Stories
We shared a story about fireworks, taking time to explore the illustrations, talk about what we could see and share our ideas. The children developed their communication and language skills through discussion and storytelling.
The children had a wonderful time outdoors creating their very own pretend bonfire using leaves and sticks they collected from around the Nursery garden. They worked together to gather natural materials and carefully arranged them to build their bonfire. They then collected sticks, attached pieces of paper to the ends and used their imagination to pretend they were toasting delicious marshmallows over the fire. Once our bonfire was ready, we gathered around and enjoyed singing some favourite songs together.
Maths – Counting to 5
We practised counting to 5 and counting out groups of objects. Through fun, practical activities, the children developed their early number skills and built confidence in recognising and understanding numbers.
Phonics – Our Sound of the Week: s
We continued introducing a new sound each week, and our sound this week was s. The children explored objects and words beginning with this sound, such as sun, star, snake and sock. We had lots of fun listening for the sound and spotting it in the world around us.
PSHE – What Am I Good At?
Our learning intention was: I know how it feels to be proud of something I am good at.
We encouraged the children to recognise their own strengths, celebrate their achievements and understand what it felt like to be proud of themselves. It was lovely to see the children developing confidence and recognising their individual abilities!
Understanding the World – Bonfire Night
We learned about Bonfire Night, talked about fireworks and explored the sights, sounds and bright lights associated with this celebration. The children had opportunities to share their experiences and develop their understanding of the world around them.
Expressive Arts and Design – Firework Creations
The children got creative by making their own rockets using cardboard tubes and paper. They experimented with different colours, patterns and creative techniques to bring the night sky to life. We loved seeing their wonderful and imaginative creations.
