Year 2 have been exploring sculpture through an exciting space-themed project, discovering how different materials can be changed, shaped and combined to create three-dimensional artwork.
The children began by investigating the properties of paper and card, experimenting with rolling, folding, bending and adjusting these materials to design and construct their own rockets. They also considered how colour choices could make their designs interesting and effective.
They then used balloons and papier-mâché to create the forms for their planets. Before painting, the children explored soft pastels and oil pastels to develop planet designs, thinking carefully about colour, texture and contrast. They experimented with contrasting backgrounds to help their planets stand out and created textured surfaces inspired by photographs of real planets.
Finally, the children brought their designs to life by painting their papier-mâché planets. They carefully observed scientific images, selecting colour and texture schemes to replicate the appearance of different planets. They experimented with wet blending, different brushstrokes and layers of paint to build up colour, texture and detail.
Through this project, Year 2 have developed their understanding of sculpture, while learning how materials, colour, texture and painting techniques can be combined to create imaginative artwork inspired by the world around us. 🚀🪐
