This week at Monteagle, we celebrated an exciting and inspiring Maths Week, where every year group explored the theme of ‘Maths in the Real World’. From Nursery all the way to Year 6, children discovered just how much maths is part of our everyday lives.
In Nursery, children enjoyed a wonderful introduction to the idea that maths is all around us. Through practical activities, counting, shapes, patterns and problem-solving, they began to see how maths helps us understand the world from a very young age.
Across the school, each year group focused on a different real-life theme and applied a wide range of mathematical skills in meaningful and engaging ways. The week was designed to help children understand that maths is not simply a stand-alone subject learnt in a classroom, but something we use all day, every day.
For example:
On the way to school, we use position and direction to follow the correct route.
In football, we use angles to aim and pass the ball accurately.
We recognise bus numbers to help us get home safely.
We use the clock and time to know how long we have before we leave.
When shopping, cooking or building, we constantly use number, measure and problem-solving skills.
Although these may seem like small everyday actions, they are incredibly important. At Monteagle, we believe it is vital for children to recognise that they are already mathematicians. These small mathematical experiences build confidence and understanding, allowing children to move on to more challenging concepts as they grow.
Throughout the week, children thoroughly enjoyed the practical and hands-on opportunities to see maths in action rather than only in books. Whether solving real-life problems, exploring mathematical patterns, measuring, designing or calculating, pupils embraced the chance to apply their learning in exciting and purposeful ways.
At Monteagle, we strive for every child to leave us as a confident, capable and resilient mathematician. Maths Week has been a fantastic opportunity to inspire children, raise the profile of maths across the school and celebrate the many ways mathematics helps us make sense of the world around us.
We are incredibly proud of all the children for their enthusiasm, curiosity and excellent participation throughout the week!
