For the final week before half term, we wanted to share some English work with you from some of our classes.

In our Pre-Formal classes, the children have been drawing faces of their choice considering the teaching and learning they have been supported with over this half term. We have looked at happy and sad faces in mirrors, making the faces out of pancakes and biscuits. We then moved on to recognising faces and the emotion linked, to last week drawing happy faces with paint, using either paintbrushes or their own fingers. Now, we want to see what the children have learnt and encouraged them to draw a face of their choice from either happy or sad.

In one of our Semi-Formal classes, the children have been reading the book ‘Little Monkey Calms Down’ (Michael Dahl). To finish the book, we are, similarly to Pre-Formal, looking to see the progress made from the children with the understanding and reading of the book. What we encourage to do now is see if the children can complete sentences in the book using colourful semantics. This is where the structure of the sentence is broken down into 3 or 4 different areas to make it easier to build. For this activity, they were using orange (who? – the boy/ the dog) and yellow (what are they doing? – running, ate).

They were also encouraged to match words and pictures to see if they have the understanding of the story itself.

Take a look at the pictures below to see the children hard at work.

Have a lovely half term break too. Enjoy the sun, and we look forward to seeing you in Summer 2!
