This week in Year 5, we have started an exciting new unit in maths all about fractions. Our focus has been on equivalent fractions, and we have also begun to explore how to compare and order fractions. Fractions can be one of our trickier topics, so spending a little extra time discussing them at home can make a big difference to the children’s confidence and understanding.

To support this learning, we have sent home an optional extra practice sheet alongside the regular homework. There is no need to print it or complete every question – the aim is simply to give you a chance to talk through some of the ideas together.

When working with your child, you might ask:

What do you know about this fraction?
What do you notice? What is similar or different about these fractions?
Which number is the numerator? Which is the denominator?
How can we tell if two fractions are equivalent?
Even a brief conversation about these questions can really help consolidate their learning and build confidence with this challenging topic.

Thank you for your continued support with maths at home – it truly makes a difference!
