Over the past few weeks, some of our classes have been taking a trip to the local shop round the corner to buy some ingredients for their cooking sessions.

We are currently reading the book ‘Spot Goes Shopping’ where Spot is buying ingredients in the store. This fitted in perfectly with our learning, as well as our personal and life experiences of going to a shop, and buying something to take home to eat.

The classes that went were spread out across the week. And each child had a visual of a picture they were there to buy. Staff and parents who supported prompted the children by showing them where to find the ingredients they needed. Once they found what they were looking for, they headed to the checkout and gave the items to the shop owner. They handed over their money, and waited outside for the rest of the children to buy their ingredients.

Finally, the children walked back to school, and used these ingredients during their cooking classes where they made pizzas and waffles. The children were so well behaved and sensible in the shop, and really enjoyed walking round to the shop and buying things.

Some of our younger children would find this walk challenging to complete, so we set up a ‘pretend shop’ in the KS1 hall for them to visit and buy their ingredients from there.

Take a look at the pictures below to see the walks in action.
