Our learning is all based around ‘Food and Health’, which is our learning topic this term.
With this, some of the children are looking at different fruits that are healthy and having a go at using a knife to cut them into smaller pieces. This helps build into their fine motor skills as well as introducing some of the children to new fruits.
Our Pre-Formal classes were making fruit skewers. Once the fruit had been cut, the children were encourage to stick them onto the skewer. The children needed some help with adding the fruits on by an adult, but were engaged and enjoyed playing with the different foods.
Our Semi-Formal classes were making sandwiches with ingredients they bought from the local shop this week. They had visual pictures of what they needed to buy from the shop, which included: bananas, apples, cucumbers, tomatoes and cheese. This was a local walk, and some parents supported with taking the children to the local shop. That afternoon, the children spent some time making sandwiches with the ingredients they had bought earlier. Similarly to the other children, they were fully engaged, loved cutting up the ingredients. And the most fun and important part, was getting to eat their sandwiches!
Finally, our Formal class are looking at designing their own bird feeders for the outside space they have linked to their classroom. They were offered some fruit from school for this activity, with some extra bird feed pellets to use to encourage the birds to come down to feed. They needed to make a hole in the apple first, to help tie the piece of string through. Once they had successfully done this, the children were encouraged to stick the small pieces of bird feed into the side of the apple. Finally, they took them outside and hung them onto the fence, so the children can watch the birds come down and eat their creations. We hope the children get to see the birds feeding!
