Our Intent
At Monteagle, our RE curriculum gives pupils the opportunity to understand each other’s beliefs, practices, and ways of life. RE makes valuable contributions to the personal development of children, in particular their spiritual, moral, social, cultural, and intellectual development.
Through rich discussion, debate, and reflection, our RE curriculum also develops pupils’ oracy skills, enabling them to express their own views with confidence, listen respectfully to others, and engage thoughtfully with different perspectives.
Our RE curriculum encourages pupils to become resilient, mindful, and inquisitive learners who are accepting of different religions within the world we live.
Our Implementation
Religious Education at Monteagle is delivered through the Barking and Dagenham Agreed Syllabus, which provides a clear, progressive framework for exploring religious and non-religious worldviews. Each unit is structured around key enquiry questions that encourage pupils to investigate, interpret, and reflect on how belief influences people’s lives.
Weekly RE lessons provide opportunities for pupils to learn about and learn from religion through stories, artefacts, texts, visits, and visitors. Teachers use an enquiry-based model to promote curiosity, discussion, and reasoning. Pupils are encouraged to make connections between beliefs and practices, compare faith traditions, and express their own ideas respectfully.
Learning is enriched through experiences such as faith community visits, celebration of religious festivals, and assemblies. RE is inclusive for all learners, with adaptations to ensure accessibility and challenge.
Assessment focuses on pupils’ ability to know and understand religious and non-religious worldviews, express ideas and insights, and use skills of enquiry, reflection, and evaluation. This is undertaken as a pre and post assessment in their learning journal book .
Throughout all of this, oracy is a golden thread, with structured opportunities for discussion, role play, debate, and reflection built into lessons. Children are encouraged to express opinions, listen actively, and engage in respectful dialogue.
Our Impact
By the end of their primary journey at Monteagle, pupils will have developed a deep understanding and respect for diverse religious and non-religious worldviews, recognising the beliefs, practises, and ways of life that shape individuals and communities. Our RE curriculum fosters pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, cultural, and intellectual development, empowering them to become thoughtful, resilient, and inquisitive learners.
Pupils will confidently articulate their own views while listening respectfully to others, engaging in rich discussions, debates, and reflections that enhance their oracy skills. They will demonstrate an ability to explore and reflect on key enquiry questions, making meaningful connections between beliefs and practises across different faith traditions. This process nurtures their personal knowledge and helps them to understand how their own perspectives and assumptions about religion and belief may evolve.
Learning experiences, including stories, artefacts, visits, and interactions with faith communities, will enrich pupils’ understanding and appreciation of religion’s role in the world. Pupils will show curiosity and respect for differing viewpoints, embodying the values of trust, respect, and working hard in their approach to learning and relationships.
Assessment evidence, including learning journals, will demonstrate clear progression in pupils’ knowledge, understanding, and skills in enquiry, reflection, and evaluation. Pupils will leave Key Stage 2 equipped with the confidence to engage thoughtfully with complex religious ideas and the skills to continue their learning journey with an open and respectful mindset.
