INTENT

At Monteagle, children are at the heart of our PSHE curriculum. Through the Jigsaw programme, we equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive as individuals and active members of their communities. Our curriculum promotes emotional literacy, resilience, oracy, wellbeing, and positive relationships, while ensuring every child’s voice is heard and valued.

In EYFS, we focus on helping children recognise and manage their emotions, develop empathy, and build self-regulation, with oracy supporting them to express their feelings confidently. From Year 2 onwards, pupils explore financial education, learning to make responsible decisions about money through discussion and reasoning. In Year 4, the TENDER toolkit deepens understanding of respectful relationships and empowers pupils to speak out against unhealthy behaviours. By Years 5 and 6, Philosophy for Children (P4C) develops critical thinking, enquiry, and dialogue—placing oracy at the heart of respectful communication.

Student voice is central to PSHE at Monteagle. Through our active School Council, pupils learn to represent others, share ideas, and influence positive change within our school community. We aim for all pupils to leave Monteagle as confident, caring, and articulate individuals who value diversity, make informed choices, and contribute positively to society.

IMPLEMENTATION

PSHE at Monteagle is delivered through the Jigsaw 3–11 scheme of work, which provides a spiral, progressive curriculum that builds year on year. Our approach ensures consistency across the school, while also reflecting the needs of our pupils and community.

  • Weekly lessons in every year group ensure continuity and progression.
  • Termly assemblies reinforce Jigsaw themes and our school values.
  • Standalone lessons address safeguarding priorities or emerging needs.
  • Campaign weeks such as Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Week, and Safer Internet Day give children opportunities to explore issues in greater depth.
  • Mindfulness practices are embedded in lessons, giving children tools to regulate emotions, concentrate, and stay calm.
  • Specialist programmes enhance the curriculum: a focus on financial education (Y2–Y6), the TENDER toolkit (Y4), and P4C (Y5–Y6).

Throughout all of this, oracy is a golden thread, with structured opportunities for discussion, role play, debate, and reflection built into lessons. Children are encouraged to express opinions, listen actively, and engage in respectful dialogue — skills that underpin both their learning and personal development.

PSHE is not confined to the classroom; it is woven through the wider life of Monteagle School, influencing our ethos, values, and the way children and adults interact daily.

IMPACT

The impact of PSHE at Monteagle is seen in our children’s learning, behaviour, wellbeing, and sense of belonging. We measure impact in a range of ways, including:

  • Assessment for learning embedded within each Jigsaw Puzzle.
  • Pre- and post-spidergram assessments to track progress in knowledge, understanding, and confidence.
  • Pupil voice, which gives children the opportunity to reflect on their learning, their wellbeing, and their ability to express themselves with confidence.
  • Data from the SEMH team, showing improvements in resilience, behaviour, and mental health outcomes.
  • School culture and ethos, observed through respectful relationships, inclusivity, articulate self-expression, and positive behaviour across the school.
  • Learning evidence, including books, displays, and work samples showing progression of vocabulary, concepts, and skills.

Ultimately, the impact of PSHE at Monteagle is children who are confident, emotionally literate, resilient, financially aware, articulate, and prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.
