Teaching, Learning and Assessment at Monteagle Primary
At Monteagle Primary, we are committed to providing an inclusive, high-quality education that enables every pupil to achieve their best. Our approach is firmly rooted in our core values of trust, respect, and working hard, which underpin everything we do in the classroom and beyond.
Our teaching cycle follows a structured plan, teach, and review approach. This ensures learning is purposeful, well-paced, and responsive to pupils’ needs.
Assessment at Monteagle Primary is primarily formative. We use a variety of methods to assess learning in the moment and provide quality feedback that moves pupils forward. These include:
- Thoughtful, effective questioning to probe understanding and address misconceptions as they arise.
- Peer assessment to encourage reflection and collaborative learning.
- Live marking and editing during lessons to provide immediate feedback and support improvement.
- Quizzing to reinforce knowledge and identify areas for revision

Through our continuous cycle of assessment for learning, and by using a range of strategies informed by our school’s Teaching and Learning Guidelines, we identify individual strengths and areas for development. Differentiation and targeted interventions ensure that all pupils, including those with additional needs, receive the support they need to succeed. Teachers are skilled in using assessment insights to adapt their teaching, ensuring every child is both engaged and appropriately challenged.
Central to this, Oracy is the golden thread that runs through all aspects of our teaching, learning, and assessment. We believe that strong spoken language skills are fundamental to deepening understanding, building confidence, and enabling pupils to articulate their thinking clearly. As part of the, oracy plays a key role in our assessment practice — through discussion, questioning, and verbal reasoning, teachers gain valuable insight into each child’s understanding and progress.
