This week in Science, Year 5 have been learning all about the solar system. We have been discovering fascinating facts about the planets, their orbits, and the incredible distances that separate them.

To help us understand just how vast space really is, we combined our Science learning with some Maths skills. Using chalk and metre sticks, we created a scaled version of the solar system on the playground. Each planet was carefully measured out to scale, giving us a much clearer sense of just how much space lies between them.

The children were amazed to see that while the inner planets sit relatively close together, the outer planets are spread out over enormous distances. This practical activity really brought home the idea of just how huge our solar system is!

Year 5 have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity, asking thoughtful questions and making excellent links between their Science and Maths learning.
