This week we moved on with our WW2 topic and learnt about rationing. Did you know that households had to register with retailers and use coupons to purchase food? We couldn’t believe the foods that were restricted and how limited essential resources were during that time.

During the first part, we made ration books which were similar to the ones used during the Second World War. After, the children decided on the tokens they would use to design a recipe for an evening meal. With the food items on offer, we discussed how we could adapt modern recipes to make a nutritious meal. This activity highlighted the impact rationing had on families during that time and made us reflect on our food consumption.

In wartime, the government encouraged people to plant victory gardens not only to supplement their rations but also to boost morale. We decided to plant seeds to investigate the success and process of planting seeds in the UK.
