On Wednesday 17th January 2024, Year 2 went on an exciting trip! We visited the Royal Airforce Museum located in North London. Both the children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Our purpose for this visit was to learn about the history of planes. In our History unit of study, we are currently learning about the Wright Brothers. Prior to visiting, the children learnt about how Orville and Wilbur Wright invented an airplane and achieved one of the first flights. During our trip to the RAF museum, children got to visit an art gallery and looked at statues. We spent most of our time exploring around several different planes and learnt information about them. The children engaged in interactive activities including using their artistic skills to draw, listening about planes through sets of headphones and playing games with planes on the interactive wall. Some children also visited a playground area. Each class in the year group took part in a workshop. The workshop leader took the children on a learning journey about the history of flight. The adults were both pleased and impressed at our children’s responses to the questions asked. The children learnt spent some more time learning about the following planes: the Spitfire, the Red Arrows and the Flying Boat Seaplane. Some children were fascinated by planes that flew under the radar. One child shared, ‘the Red Arrows plane is the same colour as our school uniform’, whilst another added ‘…and it’s wings are different to the Spitfire planes because they are backwards’. When asked, ‘why do you think they are designed like that?’ He responded ‘I think it makes them go faster.’ An adult added, ‘like an eagle can move their wings’. The Year 2 team appreciated the support of other members of staff as well as parent volunteers. Many thanks! Finally after our trip, the children are currently writing a cross curricular (Humanities and English) write which is a recount of our trip to the RAF museum.
