As many classes came to a halt, football in Monteagle went up a gear. The girls’ footballers of year 5 and 6 in Monteagle turned up in their droves on Friday afternoon to commence our mini-tournament. The quality of the games was second to none, and it is clear to see women’s football in Monteagle has gone from strength to strength, with over 40 young women giving it their all on the field. The countries involved were Australia, Ireland, England, and the USA.

The atmosphere was electrifying as the girls took to the field, showcasing their passion and skill for the beautiful game. Parents and teachers were treated to thrilling matches that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Each team displayed remarkable teamwork, determination, and flair, proving that women’s football is thriving in our community.

After an epic few games and the fear of rain looming overhead, Mr. Collymore, decided that the excitement would not end there. The games resumed on Monday morning, much to the delight of the year 5 and 6 children, who were eager to witness more incredible football action.

Once again, the quality of skill was evident, this time in front of record crowds, with even the year three children joining in to cheer on their older peers. It was heartening to see the younger students inspired by the talent and dedication of the older girls, igniting a passion for the sport in them.

The tournament reached its pinnacle, with the final match concluding in a nail-biting face-off between England and Ireland. Both teams demonstrated exceptional prowess, leaving no doubt about the sheer talent and potential of our female footballers.

When the final whistle blew, Ireland emerged victorious, securing the top spot in the competition. However, every participant, regardless of the team, demonstrated immense passion, determination, and sportsmanship, making the entire event a resounding success.

A special mention must go to our dedicated year 5 and 6 coaches, trainers, and selectors, whose invaluable guidance and support have contributed significantly to the success of the competition. Not only do we have talented footballers at our school, but we also have amazing leaders who inspire and guide our young athletes towards excellence.

As the women’s FIFA World Cup 2023 approaches, the excitement at Monteagle is palpable. We eagerly await the opportunity to cheer on the Lionesses ( and Ireland) as they compete for victory in August. The success of our mini-tournament has filled us with hope and anticipation, knowing that the passion for football in our school community is stronger than ever before.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this event possible and to all the participants who showcased the true spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. The celebration of women’s football in Monteagle is a testament to the progress we’ve made and the promising future that lies ahead for women in sports. Let us continue to nurture and support our young athletes as they strive for greatness on and off the field. Here’s to a summer filled with football fever and dreams of triumph for our beloved teams!
