This week in Science, Year 5 have been comparing the change of different ingredients when mixed in regular tap water, and then comparing their results to the change of the different ingredients when mixed with boiling water.

We tested; sugar, salt, yeast and flour in different groups within the water.

We found out that sugar dissolves in the water, showing no change to the water.

The yeast bubbled and released a horrible smell, turning the water grey and thick.

The salt seemed to dissolve when mixing the water around, but as the water settled the salt settled at the bottom of the cup.

Finally, the flour made the water go very lumpy and white. “It smelt like porridge”, some of the children explained.

Here are some pictures of us taking part in the experiment.
