This week Reception children have been reading the book, ‘Monkey Puzzle’, written by Julia Donaldson. The story goes like this….When little monkey can’t find his mother, his kind friend, ‘the butterfly’, offers to help in the search. Little monkey keeps describing how his mum looks and his friend the butterfly leads him to different animals in the jungle, like the elephant, bat, snake and many other animals. There is cause for confusion in the search because little monkey never says his mum looks like him but uses other descriptors, for example , he says that his mother is big, so his friend, butterfly leads him to an elephant.. In the end, when they don’t find his mum, little monkey comes up with just the right description and then his friend is able to find his mum.
Reception children enjoyed reading this book and got aware of rhyming vocabulary and they found Axel Scheffler’s vibrant illustrations fascinating. Children during group discussions discussed about themselves and their striking resemblance with their parents/ family members. Children practised writing own sentences and in EAD, they designed a jungle scene and learnt to draw their own Little Monkey and other animals.During their UW lesson, children learnt facts about Monkeys. In Maths, children learnt to use Numicon to add single digit numbers. All had lots of fun learning, indoors as well as outdoors!
Do take a look at the photos attached, which reflect their amazing perseverance and hard working skills.
