This week in Maths, reception children’s focus has been to develop a deep understanding of our counting system. All the children practiced their 1-2-1 counting skills by counting a variety of objects. They also counted ten things which couldn’t be seen or tagged such as hops, jumps, clicks and counting how many times they heard a bell ring. Reception children have also been learning to count using rekenrek. Rekenrek is a counting frame just like abacus. It has two rows, and each row has 10 beads, which are five white and five red beads. All the children enjoyed using a rekenrek and it has helped them to recognise the pattern of counting system. With plenty of counting opportunities provided and with lots of practice, many children are able to count reliably beyond 20.
