Throughout the book, Harry Miller shows a number of different emotions.

Older Harry has to deal with not being as active as he used to be as well as dealing with leaving his house for a nursing home.  Younger Harry starts by feeling excited about running to the coast, has to deal with exhaustion, falling in love and then finally reaching the beach.
