Over the past 3 weeks we have been learning about different types of mini-beasts. We have done work around the popular story ‘the very hungry caterpillar’ and made caterpillar pictures and butterfly paintings, gone on a bug hunt and had a lot of fun in our bug house role play area. The children were very interested in observing the life cycle of the caterpillar and carefully observed our caterpillars grow bigger each day. The children immediately commented when they noticed the caterpillars making cocoons and carefully watched, anticipating the day they would emerge from their cocoons as butterflies. On Monday the children got a lovely surprise when they came to school as we had 5 beautiful butterflies flying around their enclosure. We were very excited to observe them and noticed the pretty patterns on their wings. On Tuesday we gathered together in our garden to set them free. Everyone waved goodbye as they flew away.
