After enjoying their first science experiment in our previous article ‘Melting point’, our budding scientists were keen to continue their investigations.

With winter looming just around the corner, all the trees in our school have shed their leaves so we decided to take a closer look at some leaves and see what we could find out.

First, we collected a wide range of leaves and brought them back to our classroom for a more detailed analysis.  We used a torch and a magnifying glass to inspect the finer details of the leaves, using this equipment, we were able to identify and study the veins and the stalks far easier.

What was so good about this experiment?  All of our would be scientists collected such a variety of leaves it gave us the opportunity to learn many new words to describe the different types of leaves.  Some leaves were hard, some prickly and spiky, some were bumpy whereas others were smooth.

Needless to say, we all had a lot of fun whilst learning about leaves at the same time!
