We have been considering living things and we’ve looked at mouldy bread and considered whether or not bread is alive or not. This investigation led us to think about the ‘make-up’ of bread and the separate ingredients used in its production.

During our conversations, the notion that YEAST was actually a living microorganism was discussed. We chose therefore, to explore this further and ask the questions: 1)What helps it grow? and 2)What conditions does it prefer?

We conducted a very simple investigation, using yeast, sugar, water, bottles and a balloon. The children were very excited throughout and you should ask them to explain the results to you.

If you’d like to carry out the investigation at home, then just click on the picture and it will take you to a website explaining the whole process. Enjoy the gallery of the children hard at work!
