In Year 3, we have been learning about soil and it is much more interesting than you might think!  We have collected soil samples from the school grounds.  To do this we had to dig down and scoop up a sample of soil into a plastic jar using a very technical piece of science equipment – a fork!  Once we had our sample of soil, we had to bring it back to the classroom and top up the jar with water.  We observed that pieces of  soil material floated to the top and sat on the surface of the water.  From our knowledge of soil, we believe these to be pieces of root, decaying leaves and seeds.  Now we are waiting patiently to see if anything else happens to the sample.  We hope we will see other layers of sediment appear.
